Box Score Despite a 16 point lead early in the game the UW-River Falls men's basketball team lost a nail biter, 71-69 to Luther College this evening.
Two quick three pointers by
Grant Erickson helped the Falcons jump out to a 7-0 lead early in the game. UWRF had a 16 point lead just over five minutes into the game for the largest lead by either team going 5-6 from three point range in that time period. UWRF finished 10-18 (55.6%) from three point land and 27-49 (55.1%) from the field in the game.
Luther was able to claw back a bit the rest of the half and went into halftime down by just eight 44-36 to UWRF.
To start the second half Luther went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 44 all.
Jon Androus led Luther in scoring with 19 points to go along with six assists and four rebounds for a complete game. Jake Martin also added 13 points and seven rebounds.
The end of the game got exciting as Androus hit a three to give Luther a three point lead with just three minutes to go.
Ben Gresmer was able to tie the game when he hit a three with 1:48 to go. Gresmer was perfect from the field going 4-4 including 3-3 from behind the arc to finish with 11 points.
Both teams put in lay ups around to put the game at 69-69 with under one minute to go. Martin missed a jumper at 39 seconds but an offense rebound allowed Luther to take up the majority of the time left in the game and Michael Crocker hit a jumper with just four seconds left.
On an inbounds play
Ollie White was able to get a look off but could not connect to tie the game as the clock hit zero.
Devin Buckley led UWRF in scoring going 7-12 from the field for 17 points.
David Berthene put up 12 points from the bench, White scored 11 and Erickson put in nine points adding a team high eight rebounds and five assists.
UWRF drops to 4-6 overall on the season and Luther improves to 7-3 going into a bit of a break for the holidays.
The Falcons will have ten days off before playing in the UW-Eau Claire Holiday Classic on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 against the University of Northwestern and Northland College with both games set to tip off at 5 p.m.Â
