The Falcon men's basketball team dominated every phase of the game in a 76-46 win over Northland College in a contest played at the UW-Eau Claire Holiday Classic on Tuesday afternoon.
The win evened the team's overall record at 6-6 and the Falcons won both games at the Classic. On Monday the Falcons beat Northwestern-St. Paul,
79-75. UWRF has now won two straight games and three of its last four.
The Falcons, now with a 22-5 advantage over Northland in the all-time series, held a commanding 36-17 lead at the half.
Devin Buckley led the first half charge scoring nine points.
Ben Gresmer and
Joe Deppe, coming off the bench, both added six points to help the Falcons to the 19-point lead.
Jay Sewer was the set up man finishing the first 20 minutes with six assists. The Falcons outrebounded Northland, 22-12, led by
Ollie White who had six. The Falcons shot lights out in the first half. They finished 12-22 (.545) from the floor, including an even better 8-14 (.571) from behind the three-point line.
With about 17:30 to play in the first 20 minutes, Northland had its only lead, 3-2. From there the Falcons went on a 16-0 run over the next eight minutes to take an 18-3 lead with 9:03 to play. Buckley hit a three with just over four minutes to play to push the Falcon lead to 23-6.
UWRF, now 5-1 in neutral court games, continued its strong play in the second half outscoring the Lumberjacks, 40-29. The closest Northland could get in the second half was 16 points and that happened three times - the last with 2:21 to play, 69-43. But the outcome was not in doubt and the Falcons closed the game out for the win.
Fourteen of the 16 Falcons who played scored in the contest. Buckley led the way with 13 points. He was the only Falcon to score in double figures showing that UWRF a balanced scoring attack in this game.
Ollie White, who scored six points, led his team with nine rebounds. The Falcons continued to dominate that stat in the second half and finished with a 47-27 advantage. The 47 rebounds is the second most by the team in a game this year. The Falcons were 23-44 (.523) from the field, including 12-23 (.522) from beyond the arc. Sewer added one more assist in the second half and finished with a season-high seven.
The Falcons, now 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC, return to conference play on Saturday at UW-Whitewater. The tip off is set for 7 p.m. UWW, ranked No. 12 in the country in the latest D3hoops.com poll, enters the game on a four-game winning streak and are 9-2 overall, but 0-2 in WIAC play.
