Arik Smith hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to pull the Falcons within one point of the No. 14 ranked Warhawks on Saturday afternoon. A pair of free-throws on the other end gave Whitewater a 72-69 edge with nine seconds left. The Falcons had one final chance to send the game into overtime but the potential game-tying three came up short, giving the Warhawks a 72-69 victory.
Smith finished with a game-high 21 points, along with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Smith scored over 20 points six times in 2012-13, including four times in the final six games.
Trailing by 13 points in the second half, the Falcons went on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 48-48. During the run, the Falcons hit 6-of-9 shots including three-pointers from
Ben Gresmer,
David Stanley, and
Zach Peterson.
A few possessions later, and
David Berthene hit another three to give the Falcons their first lead of the game at 51-50 lead with 11 minutes to play.
The Falcons made 7-of-13 from 3-point range, while shooting 45-percent from the field. They held the No. 14 ranked team to just 39-percent shooting but the Warhawks had a 39-30 edge on the glass.
Peterson wrapped up his collegiate career with 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Fellow Senior
UT Udo added eight points and two offensive boards in his final game for the Falcons.
Berthene finished with 12 points making two-of-three beyond the arc.
The Falcons 2012-13 season comes to an end as the Falcons come up just short against the defending national champions. The Falcons finish with an 8-17 overall record and 3-13 in the WIAC.
