For the second consecutive year, the Falcons and Titans have played into double overtime in their WIAC game at Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh. But this year the Falcons came up short, falling 76-72 in the second overtime, ending their two game winning streak.
Zach Peterson hit a clutch game-tying three with eight seconds remaining in the first overtime to tie the game at 68-68, sending the game into the second overtime. Following a miss,
David Berthene grabbed the offensive rebound, before
Arik Smith found Peterson for the three to extend the game another five minutes.
The Falcons never led in the low-scoring second overtime, making just 2-of-9 from the field as they dropped a heartbreaker to the Titans.
The Falcons jumped to a big lead late in the first half. In the final minutes of the opening period, they went on a 10-2 run and closed out the half with a 29-19 lead.
Midway through the second half, the Titans went on a 14-3 run of their own closing the gap to 49-48 with just over six minutes to play. Neither team made a field goal in the final 2:48 of regulation, leaving the game even at 58-58 after forty minutes.
The Falcons dominated on the boards, pulling down a season-high 52 rebounds compared to just 34 from the Titans. It was a season-high for the Falcons and their most since grabbing 54 at North Central last season. The 21 offensive rebounds is the most since Nov. 11, 2009 against Augsburg - 103 games ago.
Both Peterson and
Ut Udo had game-highs with 11 rebounds, including six offensive for each. The 11 rebounds is a career high for Udo, he also finished with seven points. Peterson had a team-best 16 points for his third consecutive double-double.
The Falcons scoring was spread out between nine players, including six with at least seven points.
David Stanley finished with 11,
Ben Gresmer with 10 and six rebounds.Smith had nine points, four rebounds, and two assists, and Berthene finished with eight.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday night for their final home game of the season as they host La Crosse. Tip off is at 7:00 p.m. at Karges Center.
