Men’s Basketball Team Drops Tough One to UW-Oshkosh, 65-63 - Video Added

The Falcons dropped a conference matchup to UW-Oshkosh depite 20 points from Ollie White and 18 from Ben Gresmer.

The UWRF men's basketball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans, 65-63, on Saturday evening at the Karges Center despite a season-high 20 points from senior forward Ollie White.

White hit seven of eight shots despite being double and triple-teamed all evening; he added two rebounds, one steal and one block. Senior forward Ben Gresmer scored 18 points on five of eight shooting. He went 50 percent from three point land, grabbed four rebounds and went 6-8 from the line.

The Falcons carried a 29-25 lead into halftime thanks to Gresmer's 11 points and White's eight. White went 3-3 from the field in the first half, adding one block, one steal and two rebounds. Gresmer hit four of six shots. The Falcons were 6-7 from the free throw line and 40 percent from the field in the first. They were outrebounded 17-11 but won the turnover battle 10-7. UWRF's largest lead hit seven in the first, while the Titans led only once, at 4-3.

The Titans were led in the first half by role player Nick Olson, who scored eight points off the bench. They shot 47.8 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 10 times, hit no three pointers and only attempted three free throws.

The ball would not fall for the Falcons when they needed it to in the second half. Missed opportunities eventually led to the Titans gaining a late lead. A Grant Erickson steal with 31.3 seconds left in the game, down one point (64-63), had the Falcons in good position to grab a conference win; he called a timeout as he was sliding on the court.

But, Jay Sewer missed a contested three pointer with 15 seconds left, and Olson hit one of two free throws with 10.4 seconds left to push the lead to 65-63. Freshman guard Devin Buckley rebounded Olson's free throw miss, Sewer drove the court and missed another highly contested three pointer as time expired.

The Falcons led nearly the entire game before the Titans gained a 64-61 lead with 1:18 left in the contest. Wisconsin-Oshkosh was led by senior guard Jade Royston, who contributed 16 points. Sophomore guard Alex Olson also scored 15.

Erickson finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Buckley contributed five points and five rebounds. Sewer, Erickson and sophomore center Connor Goodwin led the Falcons with two assists each. The Falcons finished the evening at 40.4 percent from the field, 28 percent from beyond the arc and 72 percent at the line. They were outrebounded 31-25 but won the turnover battle 16-13.

The Titans scored 32 points in the paint, 14 more than the Falcons, and UWRF only had nine bench points.

The Falcons fell to 6-9 on the season and 1-5 in WIAC play. They have now lost three straight and are 1-4 at home. Wisconsin-Oshkosh is 78-45 all-time against UWRF.

The Titans improved to 5-8 overall, 1-4 in the WIAC and 1-4 on the road.

The Falcons travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers (14-0) on Saturday evening for their next contest; the tip is at 7 p.m.
