Men's Basketball Comes Close to Upsetting No. 1 Stevens Point

Five Seniors Play Last Home Game

The UW-River Falls Falcons came close to pulling the upset at home against No. 1 UW-Stevens Point on senior night.

UWSP got off to a hot start hitting three shots from behind the arc and jumped out to a 17-8 lead. Devin Buckley connected on two three pointers in the first half off the bench for UWRF and Ollie White nine points and five rebounds. Clayton Heuer already had a double-double after the first half with 11 points and 10 rebounds. After the first half of play UWSP led 34-25 over the Falcons.

David Berthene opened up the second half with a three to help UWRF start the second half off strong. At 13:52 of the second half the Falcons took a 36-35 point lead. UWSP quickly took the lead back and the rest of the half went back and forth and stayed close between the two teams.

UWRF took a two point lead one more time in the game when Grant Erickson scored on a lay up with 5:12 left in the game to make it 50-48.
Heuer hit two free throws with 46 seconds left in the game to move UWSP up 52-50.

Jay Sewer attempted a late second three pointer that rolled out with the clock winding down.

The Falcons finished 20-54 (37%) from the field and 7-27 (25.9%) in the game and grabbed 50 rebounds while the Pointers shot 19-49 (38.8%) from the field, 7-19 (36.8%) and had 54 rebounds.

White had 13 points and nine rebounds in the game. Buckley also had 13 points in the game. Berthene had eight points in the game and Ben Gresmer had five rebounds.

UWRF drops to 7-16 on the season and 2-12 in the WIAC. They will finish the season this coming week on the road. Wednesday evening they will be against UW-Superior who they beat earlier this season with tip off at 7 p.m.
