Softball Wins Two Games Over Bethel University in Home Opener

Falcons Win First Game 8-6, Second Game 6-1

The UW-River Falls Falcons softball team beat Bethel University 8-6 and 6-1 in its home opener this evening.

First Game: UWRF 8, Bethel 6

With the Falcons down one run in the bottom of the sixth inning Sarah Bohlen hit a home run to left center that scored three runs.

Bethel got on the board first in the game right away in the first inning.

The Falcons went on a roll scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second inning.

Abbie Morris hit a RBI single to left field and Sarah Sorensen hit a single to center field that brought in two runs in the first.

A Bohlen double in the second inning made the score to 5-1 in favor of UWRF.

A five hit inning and the help of one Falcon error brought in four runs for Bethel in the top of the third to tie the game up.

Brooke Lauritzen pitched the first five innings for the Falcons. She struck out two batters and gave up eight hits. Only two of the five runs scored while she was in were earned runs.

Lauren Janssen came in to pitch the last two innings. She gave up a home run in the top of the sixth that would give Bethel its first lead of the game.

Bohlen's home run in the sixth came with two outs in inning at the tie. Kati Stodalka and Amber O'Connell were both on base. She now has five home runs on the season.
Janssen got the win and improved to 4-3 on the season. The only hit she gave up was the home run.

UWRF had 12 hits in the game. Bohlen, Morris, Abby Veloske and Ali Murray all had two hits each in the game.

Second Game: UWRF 6, Bethel 1

Bethel scored a run right away in the top of the first again in the second game but would not get another hit against Morris who pitched a full game striking out seven batters and only allowing three hits.

Bethel's only run of the game came on the first at bat when Angie Jackson hit a home run to center field.

Bethel held on to its lead until the fifth inning. Michelle LaCasse singled in the inning to bring Sarah Sorensen home for the run. The Falcons had a good opportunity to score more runs with runners on second and third with only one out but the next two batters popped up to the pitcher.

UWRF went on a tear in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring five runs off five hits. Veloske hit a big double to left center to bring in two runs and Murray hit a double of her own to left center that brought in two more in the inning. Stodolka helped finish the scoring off by hitting a single to center field.

The Falcons had 10 hits in the game. Morris had two hits and Veloske went 3-3 batting in the game.

Morris improved to 6-6 on the season with the win and UWRF improved to 13-12 after the two victories.
Bethel drops to 13-10 after the two losses.

The Falcons will play at home again Saturday afternoon for alumni reunion day against UW-Superior with the games set to start at noon and 2 p.m. The Division III week celebration will also be taking place by the softball field.
