RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls softball team mounted multiple comeback efforts but ultimately fell 15-7 in eight innings to UW-Platteville in the completion of a suspended game on Sunday, May 3 at Perkins Stadium.
The contest originally began on April 11 as the second game of a doubleheader and was halted due to weather in the fifth inning. At the time of the suspension, the Falcons had rallied to tie the game at 5-5 and had two runners on with one out, poised to potentially take their first lead of the afternoon.
UW-Platteville opened the scoring in the first inning of the original game with a three-run home run. UWRF responded with a run in the second before the Pioneers extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth.
The Falcons answered in that same inning prior to the delay, stringing together a four-run rally behind key hits from Addi DeMeyer, Ella Stuber, and Caitlyn Kressel to even the score at 5-5 before weather forced play to be suspended.
When action resumed on May 3, UWP regained control with two runs in the sixth. UWRF responded once again in the bottom half, using a sacrifice fly from Kressel and an RBI single by Grace Gardner to tie the contest at 7-7.
The game moved into extra innings before the Pioneers capitalized in the eighth, taking advantage of defensive miscues to score eight runs (seven unearned), securing the15-7 victory.
Stuber led the Falcons with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Kressel finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a double and a sacrifice fly.
Brooklyn Vangruensven started in the circle, working six innings. Lucy Knutson and Hailey Kincaid combined to finish the contest in relief following Sunday's resumption.
