Box Score River Falls, Wis.- The UW-River Falls Men's Hockey team took on the #6 UW-Stevens Point Pointers Friday night at Hunt Arena and claimed a 3-2 victory in the team's first meeting since the 2015 WIAC Tournament Championship finale.
The action started slowly with the Falcons and Pointers combining for just three shots in the first six minutes. The Pointers grabbed the first power play of the game on a minor penalty with 13 minutes left in the first period. UWSP attempted just one shot during the power play but the shot was denied and the Falcons killed the first power play of the night.
As the first period wore on, the Falcons tallied six shots on the net. UWSP was able to get a good shot off from the point but UWRF senior goaltender
Tanner Milliron was able to glove down the save and Falcon
Danny Hamburg missed wide on the return opportunity, keeping the scored netted at zero.
Just six seconds before the end of the first period the Falcons picked up a power play on a minor penalty. The power play rolled over to the second period but the Falcons were unable to get a quality shot on goal and the Pointers killed the penalty.
A cross-checking penalty five minutes into the second stanza gave the Falcons their second power play of the game. UWRF missed a quick opportunity on the power play but with eight minutes left in the second period, the Falcons went on the power play for the third time in the game after a slashing penalty by the Pointers. UWSP was quickly called for too many men on the ice and the Falcons took quick advantage of the 5-3 lopsidedness. Junior
Jeff Bergh smacked home the first goal of the game with the assist from
Kyle Gattelaro, putting the Falcons ahead 1-0.
Stevens Point knotted things up with just 13 seconds left in the second period when Joe Kalisz scored for the visitors. The tie lasted for just over five minutes as Falcon senior
Zach Schrotenboer was able to beat the UWSP goaltender off the assist from Bergh to push the Falcons ahead 2-1.
With 11 minutes to go in the third period the Falcons were called for a hitting from behind penalty, putting UWSP on their fourth power play of the night. The Pointers' Nathan Harris snuck the puck past Milliron with 10 minutes to go, evening things up at 2-2.
It only took the Falcons 20 seconds to respond. Junior
Christian George found the net on his sixth shot of the night with an assist from
Taylor Burden to put the Falcons ahead 3-2. Milliron stopped six shots, including a power play attempt, fending off the visitors even after UWSP pulled their goalie, to help secure the Falcon victory.
The Falcons outshot UWSP 31-29 and had 38 faceoffs to the Pointers' 28. George finished with six shots on goal and Bergh finished with four shots for the Falcons.
Next up for the Falcons are the #8 UW- Eau Claire Blugolds. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, December 5.
