Box Score Eau Claire, Wis. (uwrfsports.com)- The University of Wisconsin River Falls men's hockey team scored two goals in the first period and that was all they needed to take home a 2-1 road win over Eau Claire Saturday night.
The Falcons outshot the Blugolds 17-8 in the first period but struggled to find the net until the 16:12 mark when sophomore
Kyle Gattelaro took advantage of the power play. A cross checking call on Eau Claire left the home team one man down and Gattelaro pushed the puck past Blugold goaltender Tyler Green.
Jeff Bergh and
Eddie Matsushima assisted on the goal to put the Falcons ahead 1-0.
Just under three minutes later, UWRF once again found the back of the net. Falcon junior
Mike Fazio tallied the second goal of the night as
Cory Lushanko and
Tanner Milliron grabbed the assist.
The Falcons headed into the second period with a 2-0 lead and continued to shut the Blugolds out for most of the stanza. Eau Claire finally got on the scoreboard at the 14:02 mark when T.J. Stuntz scored. Jake Hopfner and Jesse Tredinnick recorded the assist as the Blugolds pulled within 1.
The Falcons and Blugolds continued to battle through the third period but UWRF proved too much for Eau Claire as the Falcons were able to sustain their lead and hang on for the 2-1 victory.
Milliron stopped 30 shots on the night while Green tallied 31 stops for the Blugolds. Eau Claire held a 37-28 edge on faceoffs.
The Falcons return home to Hunt Arena Tuesday, December 8, when they host Hamline University. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
