Softball Sweeps Bethel Winning 5-2 In First Game, 6-5 In Second

The UW-River Falls Falcons went on the road to face Bethel University at Arden Hills, Minnesota at Ona Orth Complex and swept the series against by scores of 5-2 and 6-5 putting UWRF at 13-9 on the season.

The Falcons were led by Shannan Borchardt in game one with two RBI's and Brooke Lauritzen got the win in game one while adding two RBI's and a save in the second game.

Game 1

The game's opening score was in the third inning by Bethel, who saw Kelsey Anderson ground out to second base which helped Jessica Brown score. The Falcons responded in the fifth inning with three runs. One run was by the hands of Aiyana Ledwein with a single which drove in Lauritzen.

Abbie Morris also helped out with a hustle play after a strike out advancing to first on an error. During that same play was an error saw Ledwein advance to home; as well as a passed ball that helped Katie Thompson score from third base to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

Bethel responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Anderson singled to center field and drove in Brown once more. The Falcons added insurance runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings with Borchardt slamming a solo home run to right center field as well as singling to center field bringing in Ledwein.

Morris stepped in and got the save for the Falcons her second save of the season.

Game 2

In the second game of the doubleheader the Falcons came out firing in the second inning with Amber O'Connell doubling and driving in both Sarah Sorensen and Erin Blackford who was a pinch runner. The Falcons then went up by three runs after Michelle LaCasse knocked a single past the shortstop and drove in Thompson.

Bethel did respond in the bottom of the third inning with Anderson stepping up once more and slamming a single into left field scoring two runs to make the score 3-2.

Back and forth the two teams went after a run in the top of the fourth inning by Ledwein who singled to center field and drove in Lauritzen, Bethel then scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. First by Abbie Bircher who doubled to center field and scored Caroline Kivisto. Then Micayla Moore knocked two runs in when she singled to right field making the score 5-4 in favor of Bethel for the first time in the game.

The Falcons came up big in the top of the sixth inning with Lauritzen homering to deep center field and gave the Falcons a 6-5 lead going into the final inning. Lauritzen took the mound and got the infamous two and two thirds inning save for the Falcons to secure the victory.

The Falcons move to 13-9 on the season and will face UW-Whitewater on April 3rd at 2 p.m. in the team's first conference matchup this season.
