MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team earned an 18-13 victory over Sewanee: The University of the South, during its 2022 season opener on the campus of Augsburg University.
It was the first career win for first-year head coach
Talia Hayes, in her first contest leading the Falcons.
UWRF held a 31-28 edge in shots on goal while
Josie Johnson and
Emily Herdine led the offense with four goals each.
At the half, the Falcons led 9-6, and gained a nine-goal lead after a strong third period, before the Tigers rallied.
Up 16-7 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation, Sewanee threatened the Falcons' advantage, scoring six consecutive goals to trim the UWRF lead to 16-13 with just under six minutes left in the game. The Falcons answered with goals from
Bailey O'Donovan and
Emma Kohlbeck in the final few minutes to help seal the victory.
Goalkeeper
Ashley Olson made 15 saves, earning the win in net.
Johnson, Herdine, O'Donovan, and Kohlbeck combined for 21 of UWRF's 26 points.
Up next, the Falcons host Wartburg College on Saturday, March 5, for the home opener at Ramer Field.
