SEWANEE, Tenn. – The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team opened their 2023 season with a 15-16 loss to Oglethorpe.
It was a slow scoring first quarter with only three goals being scored. The Falcons got on the board first with a goal at 8:22 by
Bailey O'Donovan. Oglethorpe answered with two goals to take the 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, the two teams combined for 14 goals. The Falcons found the back of the next eight times. Leading them was freshman
Sydney Chance-Farley with four goals.
Josie Johnson, O'Donovan,
Emma Heerey, and
Brooke Glumack each recorded one goal. At the end of two quarters, the Falcons led 9-8.
Oglethorpe came out of the halftime break taking back the lead in the third quarter scoring four goals.
Ella Davis and Glumack each had a goal and kept the Falcons within one ending the quarter down 11-12.
The Falcons quickly tied up the game and took back the lead in the fourth scoring three goals in a row. Oglethorpe answer back with two goals and tied it up 14-14 with five minutes remaining in the game.
With a little under three minutes remaining in the game, Chance-Farley scored her fifth goal of the day giving the Falcons what appeared to be a first win of the season but in a heartbreaker form Oglethorpe scored two goals in the final minute to win 16-15.
UWRF limited Oglethorpe to 29 shot attempts while totaling 37, with 24 shots on target. The Falcons also forced 21 turnovers and were 13-of-20 on clear attempts.
Goaltender
Kayden Hersback collected nine saves. Leading the offense was
Sydney Chance-Farley with five goals in six shots on goal.
Emma Heerey collected three goals and
Brooke Glumack and
Bailey O'Donovan each had two goals apiece.
The Falcons will face Sewanee Sunday February 19 in an 11 am matchup.
