Softball splits opening day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UW-River Falls softball team opened its spring break trip on Friday with a win over Allegheny College and loss to Hiram College.

The Falcons, now 5-1 overall, return to action with another pair of games tomorrow.
 
UW-River Falls 4, Allegheny 2
In game one, The Falcons started hot, scoring a run in each of the first three innings.

Eleanor Hoge batted in the first run with a single in the first inning, scoring Kelly Aultman. In the next two innings, Hannah Richards scored on an Allegheny throwing error, followed by a Morgan Stevenson sacrifice fly to extend the UWRF lead to 3-1.

Allegheny trimmed the Falcon lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning before another Allegheny error plated another Falcon run, increasing the lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning.

Up by two runs, Lindsey Duggan pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game and earn the save. Maggie Wallin started in the pitcher's circle and earned the win, allowing one earned run in five innings pitched.

Jewel Waupekenay led the team with three hits, while Keegan Piton and Eleanor Hoge each had two.

In game two, Hiram limited the Falcons to just one run off two hits.

An RBI single from Caitlin Hartsell scored Keegan Piton for the Falcons' sole run of the game in the first inning.

Hiram proceeded to score four runs in the first, four runs in the third, and two more runs in the fifth to end the game.

Caitlin Hartsell started in the pitcher's circle and took the loss, allowing six earned runs. Lindsey Duggan pitched three innings in relief.
