ADRIAN, Mich. - The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team opened its non-conference road series with a 4-2 win at No. 4 Adrian College Saturday evening.
UWRF, now 7-0-2 overall, extends its NCAA Division III overall unbeaten streak to 40 games with the win.
A three-goal first period and four different Falcon goal scorers led the Red & White to victory, carrying a 3-2 lead into the third period before a
Madison Lavergne goal in the third period helped seal the win as the two-goal lead added enough insurance. UWRF outshot the Bulldogs 23-21 and turned away four of five Adrian power plays.
In the first period,
Katherine Bell opened the game's scoring eight minutes in with her team-leading 10th of the season, which was answered by Adrian at 16:52. The Falcons responded quickly though with a
Bailey Olson goal under a minute later, and
Megan Goodreau added another with 43 seconds left in the frame to give UWRF a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Adrian scored on its third power play chance of the night during the second period to trim the Falcon lead to 3-2 heading into the third period.
UWRF shut the door in the final 20 minutes while Lavergne scored for the second consecutive games to extend the Falcons' lead to 4-2.
Jordan O'Kane made six saves in the third period and had 19 total in the win.
The Falcons go for the series sweep tomorrow against the Bulldogs, with a 12 p.m. (ET) puck drop.
