ST. PAUL, Minn. - The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team opened its 2024 campaign with a 22-8 win at the University of Northwestern Tuesday evening.
The Falcons were paced by a 10-goal first period while outshooting the Eagles 39-12. UWRF also led 22-11 in draw controls and forced 30 UNW turnovers.
In her Falcon debut,
Samantha Hayek led UWRF with nine points off six goals and three assists. She scored the game's opening goal and added three more in the first quarter alone as the Falcons led 10-1 after the first frame.
While the Falcons were limited to two goals apiece in both the second and third periods, they carried a 14-7 lead into the final 15 minutes, then added eight more goals for good measure.
Behind Hayek's performance,
Emma Heerey and
Kinlee Knutson both had three goals, followed by two goals each from
Brooke Glumack,
Megan Peter, and
Avery Watzke.
Kayden Hersback made the start in net and totaled a pair of saves to earn the win.
Abby Hammond also played in relief and tallied two saves.
UWRF, now 1-0 overall, travels to face Augsburg University on Friday afternoon.
