RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team defeated Southwestern University 24-5 Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field during its inaugural WIAC opener.
WIAC women's lacrosse, in its inaugural season, features Southwestern and Colorado College as out-of-state affiliate members, along with UWRF, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout.
The Falcons limited the Pirates to just one shot on goal in the first half, and held the visitors scoreless through the first period, taking a 10-0 lead. UWRF added four more in the second to claim a 14-1 halftime advantage.
Southwestern scored four goals in the second half compared to UWRF's 10, as the home team held a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. The Falcons finished with a 34-8 lead in shots on goal, along with a 22-8 edge in groundballs and 21-10 lead in draw controls. The Falcons were also successful on 9-of-10 clear attempts while holding the visitors to a rate of 5-of-19.
Individually, seniors
Emma Heerey and
Bailey O'Donovan combined for eight goals while the senior duo both reached 100 career goals.
In addition,
Elizabeth Clough scored four goals along with three from
Kinlee Knutson.
Abby Hammond started in goal and earned her second win of the season, notching three saves.
The Falcons (6-3, 1-0 WIAC) continue conference action on Monday, traveling to UW-Stevens Point.
