Softball splits at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The UW-River Falls softball team split a doubleheader with the Eagles of the University of Northwestern Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field. 

The Falcons, now 10-8 overall, return to River falls to host their home and WIAC opener versus UW-Platteville on Saturday, April 13 at Perkins Stadium. 

UW-River Falls 5, Northwestern 1
Maggie Wallin pitched a complete game for the Falcons, her seventh of the season, allowing just one Eagle earned run in seven innings. She tallied five strikeouts and allowed only five hits to get the win in the pitcher's circle. 

UWRF opened the game's scoring with a Hannah Effertz RBI double to score Kelly Aultman and Abby Pitts to send the Falcons up 2-0 going into the second. Hannah Richards tripled down the right field line in the second to score Maddie Koch

In the fourth inning, Tessa Peterson reached on a throwing error to bring Jewel Waupekenay in to score. An RBI single in the sixth by UNW put them on the board, with the Falcons leading 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Peterson singled through the right side to bring Koch in to score for River Falls in the sixth and seal the win.

Maddie Koch and Kelly Aultman led the Falcons with two hits each, with Koch also having a pair of runs batted in.

Game two was all Eagles as they were able to hold the Falcons scoreless and just two hits in five innings. The Eagles were able to score 11 runs off just 12 hits and score seven runs in the fifth to secure their win. 

Johanna Breyen and Abby Pitts each had one hit for UWRF.

Brooklyn VanGruensven suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle, with Emily Crowe coming in during during the fourth, and Maggie Wallin relief pitching in the fifth. 

The game was ended after the fifth due to the eight run rule.
