Falcons rally for 3-2 overtime win at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. — The No. 2-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team rallied to defeat Saint Mary's University 3-2 Tuesday evening in overtime.

UWRF trailed 2-1 heading into the third period before a Madison Lavergne goal early in the third force overtime, and MaKenna Aure scored the game-winner with 34 seconds left in overtime for the win.

The Falcons' first overtime victory of the season improves their overall record to 17-3-2. It marked UWRF's first OT win since the 2024 WIAC O'Brien Cup 2-1 win over UW-Eau Claire. UWRF faces its WIAC rival Blugolds this Saturday, Feb. 8 in Eau Claire, Wis.

While the Falcons opened the scoring 13 minutes into regulation with MaKenna Aure's first of two goals on the night, on the power play, the Cardinals answered with a pair of goals in the second period to lead by a goal heading into the third.

It took under two minutes into the third for Lavergne and the Falcons to tie the game at 2-2, scoring on an open chance in the slot. UWRF outshot SMU 13-2 in the third period but couldn't add any more, leading to extra time.

Near the end of the overtime frame, Aure wheeled around the Cardinal net and scored her second of the game and 13th this season. Along with Aure's two goals, Lavergne had two points with a goal and an assist along with Katherine Bell notching two assists.

Jordan O'Kane made the start in net and totaled 13 saves to collect her 10th win of the season.
