MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The UW-River Falls Women's Lacrosse team opened its season with an emphatic 22-1 victory on the road at Cornell College on Saturday, March 1.
The Falcons saw a strong offensive team effort, as four players scored three or more goals in the win — UWRF held a 33-4 advantage in shots on goal in the win.
The Falcons started off the game with a strong first-period effort, scoring seven goals off 15 total shots and 11 shots on goal. Samantha Hayek scored the first goal of the season at the 12:43 mark, before Kinlee Knutson, Brooke Glumack, and Murphi Specht helped extend the advantage to 7-0 at the end of the first frame.
UWRF saw a 5-1 advantage in the second period, tallying seven more shots on goal — the Falcons led 12-1 at halftime. Hayek, Knutson, and Specht led the way with three goals each in the first half.
The Falcons added five more goals in the third while keeping the Rams off the board, extending its lead to 17-1 heading into the final period. Hayek, Specht, Molly Pierce and Natasha Berthaiume found the back of the net in the third. UWRF held a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal in the third period.
UWRF added five more goals in the fourth quarter, behind an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal, to walk off with a 22-1 victory.
As a team, UWRF totaled 15 caused turnovers and went 11-14 on clears. The Falcons held a 20-5 advantage in draw controls and a 33-4 edge in shots on goal.
Hayek led the way with six goals and three assists on the day, while Specht totaled five goals, six ground balls, and seven draw controls. Glumack led the way with six assists. In goal, Isabel Orton started off the year 1-0, recording three saves in the win.
Up next, the Falcons return to River Falls for the team's home opener. UW-River Falls will host Edgewood at 5 p.m. on March 5 at Ramer Field.
