LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team was victorious in its road matchup at Lake Forest, winning 13-11 on Saturday, March 8.
The win, which improved UWRF's record to 2-0, is the first leg of a back-to-back weekend road trip, with the Falcons slated to face Carroll tomorrow.
Brooke Glumack and Samantha Hayek had standout performances for the Falcons, as each player finished with seven points off five goals and two assists.
Both teams exchanged goals early, as Brooke Glumack and Samantha Hayek put the Falcons on the board. The Foresters knotted the game at 2-2 with 7:12 remaining in the first period, before Hayek and Glumack scored two more goals to put UWRF up 4-2. Lake Forest added a goal with 18 seconds remaining in the first period, giving River Falls a narrow 4-3 lead after one.
River Falls and Lake Forest remained scoreless through the first eight minutes of action in the second period, before Lake Forest tied things up at 4-4 with 6:43 remaining in the first half. After the Foresters went up 5-4, Glumack scored again with 2:38 to go in the period to tie the game at 5-5. Lake Forest added another goal before the half, leading 6-5 at the break.
Out of halftime, UWRF rattled off three straight goals to capture an 8-6 lead. However, the Foresters responded with three straight goals of their own, retaking a 9-8 lead with 7:40 remaining in the period. Glumack and Hayek answered back with consecutive goals to allow UWRF to retake a 10-9 advantage, which held through the remainder of the third.
The Falcons kept the momentum going into the fourth quarter, adding three more unanswered goals to take a commanding 13-9 lead with 2:40 to go. The Foresters added two late goals, but the Falcons held off any further comeback attempts to win 13-11.
Hayek's five goals came off of 10 shots on goal, while Glumack scored five off eight shots on goal. As a team, the Falcons held a 32-22 advantage in total shots and a 23-16 edge in shots on goal. Glumack also led UWRF with four ground balls, while Eleanor Thompson-Witt led the Falcons with a career-best five caused turnovers. Isabel Orton recorded five saves in the win.
Up next, the Falcons are back in action tomorrow in Waukesha, Wisconsin at 1 p.m. against Carroll.
