GEORGETOWN, Texas — The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team was victorious against Southwestern, 17-3, on Saturday, April 5, the first of two straight games in Texas for the Falcons.
UWRF tied for its second-largest goal total in a game, putting up 17 goals off 33 total shots and 19 shots on goal. The Falcons built up an early lead and never looked back, improving to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in WIAC play.
In the first quarter, the Falcons dominated with a 9-2 advantage in shots that resulted in a 6-0 lead after the first period. UWRF saw goals from Samantha Hayek (x2), Brooke Glumack (x2), Kayden Hersback, and Elizabeth Clough.
UWRF doubled its lead in the second quarter, adding six more goals off seven shots. The Falcons built up a 12-0 halftime lead behind second-quarter goals from Hersback, Natasha Berthiaume, Avery Watzke (x2), Kylah Link (x2). During the first half as a whole, River Falls held a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Falcons continued to extend their lead in the third frame, adding four more goals off six shots. Southwestern added a goal, but UWRF pulled ahead 16-1 with one quarter remaining. The Falcons saw goals from Clough, Piper Perron, Mia Hunter, and Murphi Specht.
Emma Grzywa added a goal for the Falcons in the fourth period, as a low-scoring final frame saw UWRF hold on to win 17-3.
Glumack and Clough led UWRF with three points, each doing so off two goals and one assists. Hersback, Hayek, Link, and Watzke all finished with two goals. Murphi Specht led UWRF with six draw controls.
Next up, UWRF will be back in action first thing tomorrow morning, facing No. 18 Colorado College. The Falcons and Tigers will play on Southwestern's field, with the game set to begin at 10 a.m.
