RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team knocked off the No. 18 team in the country on Wednesday night, defeating UW-Stevens Point, 70-69, on a game-winning jumper from Reggie Postel with just 0.03 seconds remaining.
Trailing 69-68 in the closing seconds, the Falcons used a timeout to set up the final possession. Off the inbound, Gavin Ralph found Postel cutting into the paint, where the sophomore rose and delivered the dagger. The bucket capped off a back-and-forth battle that featured eight lead changes and four ties.
River Falls (8-14, 3-8 WIAC) set the tone early, shooting 50 percent from the field in the opening half and carrying a 32-27 advantage into the break.
The Falcons were efficient all night, finishing 25-of-48 (52.1%) from the floor and matched Stevens Point's intensity possession for possession.
Postel led the Falcons with 15 points off the bench, including three from deep and the game-winner. Owen Havlik added 11 points, while Jack Leifker anchored the interior with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Micah Thompson chipped in 9 points and five boards.
The second half was a heavyweight bout for the full 20 minutes. Stevens Point shot 60 percent after halftime and briefly grabbed the lead with just over a minute remaining. After trading free throws, the Pointers took a 69-68 advantage at the line with 1:23 to play.
The win marks one of the biggest of the season for River Falls, knocking off the top team in the conference standings and defending home court. The Falcons outscored the Pointers 26-14 in bench points and forced 12 turnovers, turning defense into key momentum swings throughout the contest.
On a night when every possession mattered, it was Postel's final touch that delivered the statement.
The Falcons will travel to Platteville, looking to sweep UW-Platteville this season. The Falcons took down, at the time, the No. 20 Pioneers, on Alumni Night in Don Page Arena earlier this season. Tip-off is slated for Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m.
