MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team strapped down and had a stellar performance Friday evening, defeating the Blue Devils 23-7 in WIAC action while Hayek made history in the process.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 12-2 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 5-0.
The night belonged to
Samantha Hayek, etching her name into the record books by becoming the program's all-time leading goal scorer. Hayek netted four goals tonight, surpassing Emma Kohlbeck's previous record of 152 career goals, now sitting at 156 for her career. In addition to her scoring milestone, Hayek added four assists for an eight-point performance to lead all players.
UW-River Falls jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter with several Falcons finding the back of the net. The Falcons turned it up in the second, scoring nine goals to take a commanding 14-4 lead into the break. Momentum continued in the third period with seven more, effectively putting the game out of reach while scoring two more in the fourth.
Elizabeth Clough led the Falcons with five goals, while
Natasha Berthiaume added three.
Avery Watzke,
Mia Hunter,
Anna Plath and
Brooke Glumack, making her return to the turf, each contributed two. In all, 10 different Falcons put one on the board tonight.
UW-River Falls controlled the game statistically, outshooting UW-Stout 46-18 and holding a 40-22 advantage in ground balls. The Falcons capitalized when they had opportunities, converting 5-of-10 free-position attempts while forcing 38 Stout turnovers.
Defensively, the Falcons limited Stout to just four goals through the first three quarters, with strong play in goal from
Annelise Rommeck,
Isabel Orton, and
Abby Hammond combining for six saves.
Next Wednesday, the Falcons will host Hamline University at Ramer Field, opening draw at 7 p.m. The evening will also serve as Senior Night as UW-River Falls looks to continue its strong run in WIAC play.
