RIVER FALLS, Wis. – In the most tightly contested game of the season, the Falcons suffered a 13-12 overtime loss to Colorado College on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers scored with just one second remaining in regulation to force overtime before securing the game-winner in sudden death.
Despite the result, the Falcons delivered a top-notch performance, battling back from an early 3-0 deficit and controlling much of the second quarter. UW-River Falls checked off seven goals in the second frame, highlighted by multiple scores from Elizabeth Clough to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Colorado College responded in the third quarter, capitalizing on several player-up opportunities to even the score and set up a back-and-forth final frame. The Falcons regained some momentum in the fourth, with Samantha Hayek scoring twice late, including the go-ahead goal with 3:31 remaining, giving UWRF a 12-11 advantage.
However, the Tigers found a final opportunity in the closing seconds, converting a player-up chance with one second left to tie the game at 12-12 and force overtime. In the extra period, Colorado College capitalized again on a free-position opportunity to seal the 13-12 victory.
Offensively, the Falcons were led by Hayek and Clough with three goals each, while Murphi Specht and Natasha Berthiaume added two apiece. Macy Patton contributed a goal and two assists as UW-River Falls finished with 26 shots and won the draw control battle 12-11.
Defensively, Annelise Rommeck recorded six saves in goal, while the Falcons forced 20 turnovers and stayed competitive throughout against one of the conference's top teams.
With the loss, UW-River Falls moves to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play, narrowly missing out on what would have been the program's first regular season conference championship.
The Falcons will close out their conference regular season this week with a road matchup against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, April 22 at 5 p.m. in Stevens Point.
