EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team continued its victory stretch on Wednesday evening, defeating UW-Eau Claire 18-3 at Simpson Field. With the victory, the Falcons extend their win streak to 11 games and remain unbeaten in WIAC play at 4-0.
River Falls wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter. The Falcons added another goal in the second to take a 7-1 lead into halftime before a seven goal third-quarter, putting the game firmly out of reach.
Leading the charge offensively was Samantha Hayek, who recorded a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Hayek leads the conference with an average of 6.23 points per game. Elizabeth Clough matched Hayek with five goals of her own, while Macy Patton added a hat trick. Murphi Specht and Avery Watzke each added two goals, and Natasha Berthiaume added a goal and an assist in the win.
Megan Peter facilitated the offense with three assists, helping River Falls total six assists on 18 goals.
Defensively, the Falcons were just as impressive, holding the Blugolds to just 12 total shots and three goals. Goalkeeper Annelise Rommeck played all 60 minutes, making six saves in the victory. River Falls controlled possession throughout the match, winning the ground ball battle 45-39 and forcing 29 Eau Claire turnovers. Watzke picked up eight ground balls while Anna Plath added four draw controls.
The Falcons finished with a 34-12 advantage in shots and converted efficiently on free-position opportunities going 6-for-9.
UW-River Falls will look to keep its momentum rolling as it continues WIAC play on Friday at UW-Stout. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. in Menomonie.
