Falcons Beat by Edgewood, 75-67

Box Score

Edgewood College earned its first NCAA Tournament victory by knocking off No. 17 UW-River Falls at Karges Center, 75-67, on Friday night.

It marks just the third loss for the Falcons in their last 25 games at Karges Center and the first ever victory by a Northern Athletics Conference school.

The Eagles benchmark victory did not come without a scare as the Falcons made a late second half surge. Trailing by as much as 24 points, the Falcons rallied to make it a five-point game in the final minute.  The Falcons rally began with a 15-2 run during a span in which the defense created six Eagle turnovers.  In the end, the Falcons were racing against the clock and the Eagles sunk enough free throws to preserve their first NCAA Tournament win.

The Eagles and Falcons exchanged blows out of the gates, with six lead changes in the first four minutes of action before Edgewood took a lead that stuck, staying in control the final 36 minutes.

River Falls missed their first six three-pointers, and 12 of their first 13, as they attempted a season-high 24 treys in the opening round loss. Edgewood ended the first half shooting sharp from behind the arc, nailing three of their last six attempts. None were bigger than Craig Cashton's off-balanced, NBA-range three with the shot clock expiring - sparking the offense and the Edgewood crowd.

The Eagles are the 10th best shooting team in the nation and hit 52-percent from the field, including 9-of-18 from three-point range. The Eagles did not miss much in the second half, hitting 60-percent of their shots and 5-for-8 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.

The NAC's all-time leading scorer, Ben Wisniewski, hit a his second three, propelling a 12-3 Eagle run, increasing the lead to 24 points with just over seven minutes to play. Up to that point, the Eagles had held the WIAC's highest scoring team to just 11 second-half points. But the Falcons showed their ability to shoot as they put up 30 points in the final minutes as the three's started to fall.

Aaron Anderson finished with a game-high four three-pointers for the Falcons, three of them falling in the final minutes.

Shane Manor led the Falcons with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Wade Guerin finished with 14 points and four rebounds and Brian Kimble had eight points, five assists and five rebounds in the loss.

The Falcons held the rebounding edge, just as they have in all but three games this season, at 38 to 33 including matching a season-high of 17 offensive boards.  Ollie White led the way with nine boards (five offensive) to go along with his nine points.

River Falls ends another historic season in which they won their first WIAC Tournament, made their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Falcons finished with a 20-8 record for the second consecutive season as four seniors played their final game as a member of one of the best men's basketball teams in school history.
