Men's Basketball Wins Sixth Straight Over Defending National Champion Pointers

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW- River Falls (11-5, 5-0 WIAC) moved to 5-0 in the WIAC for the first time since 2010 with a grind it out performance over the defending national champion UW- Stevens Point Pointers by a score of 56-48 at home putting their win streak to six games.

The Falcons were led by Brennen Witt who scored a career high 14 points off the bench on 5-6 shooting including just his second three pointer of the season.
The game started off hot for the Falcons as they shot 60 percent in the first 10 minutes and at 6:39 in the first half, had a commanding 25-14 lead highlighted by seven straight points by Witt.

The Pointers were ahead briefly in the first half for about a minute and half, but the Falcons quickly took back the lead and lead the remaining part of the first half.
After going up 11 points, the scrappy Pointers went on a quick 7-0 run to pull within four points with four minutes to go in the first half, but the Falcons clung to a six point lead at the break by a score of 30-24.

UWRF was able to shoot 13-25 (52 percent) from the floor in the first half, but the team was unable to get any attempts at the free throw line but were able to nail four shots from beyond the arc to supplement having no shots from the charity stripe. Jon Christensen had seven points at the break and Witt had seven points at the halftime buzzer as well.

In the second half, the Falcons got a couple quick shots from Garret Pearson and lead by seven points, but UW- Stevens Point hung around playing solid defense, and holding the Falcons to 5-20 (25 percent) from the floor in the first 10 minutes of the second half and trimmed the lead to two points numerous times, with the latest being at 6:38 to go in the game with the score 45-43.

In the final minutes, the Falcons were able to eat away at the clock, and held the Pointers to 9-28 (32.1 percent) from the floor in the second half to secure the victory.

For the game, UWRF shot 20-49 (40.8 percent) and won their first game in which they did not score 60 points or more. UWRF dominated on the glass having 42 rebounds to UW- Stevens Point's 28. The Falcons controlled the paint scoring 24 points to the Pointers 10. The Falcons lead all but a minute and a half in the game, and lead the entire second half.

The bench for the Falcons scored 19 points on the night, highlighted by Witt's 14 points. Pearson was a solid 5-9 from the floor and put in 13 points for the WIAC leading Falcons. Christensen scored nine points on the night and had six rebounds.

CJ Lewis had an eight point performance on 3-9 shooting and sunk two three pointers. Jack Herum had another solid night with seven points, six rebounds, and three assists. Devin Buckley came off the bench and scored three points as well.

The Falcons held UW- Stevens Point to 19-57 (33.3 percent) from the floor on the night, and allowed just eight free throw attempts by the Pointers. The Pointers were led by freshman Ethan Bublitz with 10 points on 4-14 shooting.

Next up for the Falcons will be a road test against UW- Platteville, the tip is set for 7 p.m. in Platteville on Bo Ryan Court. Last year the Falcons swept the Pioneers in the season series. The Falcons sit alone at the top of the WIAC at 5-0, just one game above UW- La Crosse who is 4-1. UW- River Falls has a three game lead over preseason favorite UW- Stevens Point and a two game lead over UW- Whitewater who was preseason selected second in the WIAC.
