MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-River Falls softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Edgewood College Friday afternoon on the campus of Augsburg University inside the Auggie Dome.
Keegan Piton,
Johanna Breyen, and
Kelly Aultman each recorded four hits through two games, including 4-RBI days from both Piton and Aultman.
Edgewood 6, UW-River Falls 4 (8 inn.)
UWRF led 4-2 after back-to-back runs batted in by
Matti Renikow, but Edgewood fought back to force extra innings with a two-run seventh inning, knotting the score at 4-4.
The Eagles then downed the Falcons with a two-run eighth inning to earn the two-run margin of victory.
Trailing by two runs midway through the third inning, UWRF took its first lead of the day with a three-run third inning, including a 2-RBI single from
Kelly Aultman, followed by one of Renikow's two RBI.
Grace Petersen tallied two base hits and
Juliana Reynolds pitched eight innings with six earned runs, logging five strikeouts.
UW-River Falls 8, Edgewood 7
Despite trailing by six runs after the first inning, the Falcons rallied to defeat the Eagles in game two.
Down 7-1 after the first, UWRF used runs in the third and fifth, along with a big five-run seventh inning to earn the comeback victory.
After Falcon starting pitcher
Corinne Roe allowed six early runs, she was relieved by
Lindsey Duggan, who finished the game allowing just one run in seven innings pitched.
RBI doubles by Renikow and
Keegan Piton trimmed the Edgewood lead to 7-3 through five innings.
In the seventh, trailing by four runs, the Falcons rallied with five runs off five hits.
Johanna Breyen led the off the inning with a single, followed by a Piton homer, cutting the deficit to 7-5. A
Megan Halvorson RBI double and Aultman 2-RBI single then put up UWRF 8-7.
Duggan and the Falcon defense then shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to seal UWRF's first win of the season.
UWRF, now 1-3 overall, has another doubleheader at Augsburg University tomorrow morning versus Crown College.
