Falcons swept by WIAC-leading Eagles

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls softball team dropped both games of a WIAC doubleheader against UW-La Crosse Friday afternoon at Perkins Stadium.

UWL improved to 11-1 in the WIAC to remain atop the league standings, while UWRF falls to 4-6 during conference play.

Tomorrow's originally scheduled series at UW-Stevens Point is tentatively being moved to Sunday, May 1 in Madison, Wis., due to inclement weather.

A three-run fifth inning for the Eagles made the difference while Elise Weinzierl struck out seven Falcons in five innings to earn the win.

UWL scored three off three hits and one UWRF error in the fifth, and added another in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

The Falcons' sole run came in the bottom half of the sixth. After back-to-back singles from Johanna Breyen and Keegan Piton to lead off the inning, Breyen scored on an errant throw from the Eagle catcher.

UWL totaled eight hits compared to UWRF's seven. Piton led the Falcons with two hits.

Juliana Reynolds suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Maggie Wallin pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.

During game two, the Eagles limited the Falcons to just two hits while totaling 10.

After a slow start allowing UWL to take an early 3-0 lead, the Falcon defense shut the door and held the visitors scoreless in the final six innings.

UWRF's only two runs came in the third. Kelly Aultman walked and Breyen was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. Aultman came around to score on a Piton RBI single, and Breyen stole home to trim the UWL lead to 3-2.

Eagle relief pitchers Remington Stark and Elise Weinzierl held the Falcon offense from any more damage to earn the win and doubleheader sweep.

Corinne Roe made the start in the pitcher's circle for the Falcons, and allowed three earned runs in seven innings pitched.
